The University of Birmingham Motor Racing Club once again kicked off a new Uni year with a trip to Full Throttle Raceway. The indoor karting venue in Stourbridge has been a firm favourite amongst seasons club members for several years and once again proved to be equally popular with freshers. A combination of a tight technical layout and a slippery surface puts a premium on precise driving and decisive overtaking.
After a safety briefing qualifying got underway for the 10 teams, giving new drivers a chance to learn the circuit, whilst the experienced drivers battled it out for pole position. 20 minutes and a few collisions later the grid was decided with kart number 1 leading the way.
The race itself started with #1 leading from #10, early on the battle was tight but once the leaders hit traffic the gap opened up. Ali Wayman driving the #10 kart hit another setback when he was penalised for overtaking under yellows, that gave team #1 an advantage that they were never to give up. Behind them the midfield battle was intense throughout the race with teams 3, 4, 9 and 10 all within striking distance of the final podium place.
In the end team 1: Al Hall, Danny Fennel, Tom Witcomb and Alex Thornton completed 242 laps in the 2 hour session with Al also bagging the fastest lap: 23.610, teams 5 and 3 rounded off the top 3.
